Discussion:
the island tour was DEFINATELY the peak of phish

they were coming off the also-insane fall and nye 97 tours, this was
four days to blow the doors off. no warming up, no second chances.

i think you can trace this all back to the introduction of the SOTG
songs which really changed the direction of the band. it brought them
full circle from the more rock-driven mid 90's years and added the
funk and then transformed into the overall sound we know now.

anyway, the island tour was just fantastic. blows everything else
away. it's a crime they haven't released this yet, sanctity of the run
be damned. the AUDs pretty much suck.

I would say the Island Tour was the peak for that 97 funk style of playing that
they did, but I wouldn't say it was the peak for Phish. IMO, it would either
be December 95, or summer/fall of 94...

i dont understand how people say fall 97 was the best tour, then say it was
while they were on the decline.
the peak of phish means that after that era, it was all downhill. 94,95 imo was
far from the peak of phish. theyre best playing as one was 1997's entire year.

just because it was on a decline doesn't mean that it wasn't awesome. IMO
'94-'95 was their peak, went down 2 notches for '96 then up one in '97,
although a decline a very small one.
It's also a matter of taste, i prefer the jamming style of '94-'95 over the
groove style of '97 so that may help explain my preference.

yeah i know this is also a very opinionated topic. if you talk about their peak
in terms of success, most peoples answers will change. musically 94,95 i guess
could be it, although i thought 95 (only heard a few shows and thats the least
amount of discs i have for one specific year),96 sucked for the most part. 94
is one of the best second to 97.

I was living in Providence at the time. When I saw Buddy Cianci, the mayor
of Providence at setbreak, chilling stage left with a glass of wine, I knew
the party was on!
